Romania can be an important provider of energy security, but without competitive energy prices it will be extremely difficult to ensure the support of the population and political decision-makers for the transition to a green economy, declared, on Monday, in a specialized conference, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Energy, Cristian Busoi, Agerpres informs.

"Because energy was mentioned and certainly energy projects can be extremely important in the context of the circular economy and in the context of the Green Deal, the European Green Pact and the transformation that the European Union is trying to make by 2050, with ambitious objectives in 2030, I want to inform you that there is a strong determination of the Ministry of Energy to be part of this whole process. We are fully aligned with European objectives, we massively support clean, renewable sources of energy production, mainly electricity. The Ministry of Energy, with European money, whether we are talking about the PNRR or whether we are referring to the Modernization Fund, has supported and will continue to support renewable energy production capacities, in principle, obviously solar and wind, but not only. We had schemes to support initial investments, part of Capex, both from the PNRR and from the Modernization Fund for investors private. In the case of the Modernization Fund for Administrative-Territorial Units or public institutions, we are talking about the self-consumption side. We have already successfully launched two calls for projects for contracts for difference, where we offer a stable price for the next 15 years for investments in renewable energy. In parallel, we have the strategic project Neptun Deep - natural gas from the Black Sea. Gas is not a renewable source, obviously, but it is a tool for the transition and for the closure, not the renunciation, of coal throughout the European Union and even more so in Romania," explained Busoi.

In the vision of the dignitary, energy security and energy prices are two problems that must be solved when talking about the "green" economy.

"We can be an important provider of energy security, because, beyond decarbonization, the "green" economy, there are at least two other extremely important issues if we look at it from an energy perspective: energy security and energy prices. Without competitive prices and without making sure that prices decrease, it will be extremely difficult to ensure the support of the population and political decision-makers for the "green" transition. Obviously, for the transition period, the Neptun Deep source - the Black Sea source of natural gas - is extremely important. The last strategic project we have in mind is that of investments in nuclear energy, a source that helps us achieve decarbonization targets, which ensures continuity of electricity sources and security of supply. Beyond the refurbishment of Unit 1 at Cernavoda, the construction of Units 3 and 4, classic reactors, we also have the project for small and modular reactors from Doiceşti, in partnership with the United States of America," the official from the Ministry of Energy emphasized.

According to the cited source, Romania has an energy source that has not yet been explored: municipal waste.

"Also, there is an energy source that Romania has not explored very much and I know that there is interest in the market, that of municipal waste. I have seen that there have been some initiatives to use this waste for the purpose of producing energy. It is a source used in other countries of the world and even in other European countries. I know that the Italian model is always given as an example, because they have managed to develop some technologies and solve problems of some municipalities, while integrating municipal waste, garbage produced and collected in medium and large municipalities, into the concept of the circular economy. The Ministry of Energy does not interfere directly with the collection and recycling of waste, but obviously as part of the Romanian Government and, sometimes, as the ministry advising on certain normative acts, we also fully understand the value and role of waste that has not yet been fully exploited. I assure you of our determination "The Ministry of Energy is committed to being part of this project, with the competences and involvement it can have," pointed out Cristian Busoi.

The publication CursDeGuvernare (CDG) organized, on Monday, the conference with the theme "Circular economy - an ace in Romania's hand: How to multiply the billions of euros from waste into the national GDP".
