Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea advanced to the round of 16 at the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka (Japan), which offers total prize money worth USD 275,094, on Monday, after defeating Japan's Moyuka Uchijima with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Cirstea (aged 35, WTA's 51st) needed almost two hours to secure the win (1 hour 54 minutes).
The Romanian had previously beaten Uchijima (aged 24, WTA's 81st) earlier this year in the first round at Cleveland, with a score of 6-4, 6-1, on her way to winning the title.
By progressing to the next round, Sorana Cirstea has secured a cheque worth USD 4,160 and 30 WTA points, and will face the winner between Linda Noskova (Czech Republic), the second seed, and Katie Boulter (Great Britain) in the second round.
Also on Monday, Gabriela Ruse (aged 27, WTA's 99th) was defeated by Varvara Gracheva (aged 25, WTA's 83rd), a French player of Russian origin, 7-6 (7/2), 6-2, after 1 hour and 34 minutes, in the final round of qualifying.
Ruse, who had beaten Dominika Salkova of the Czech Republic 6-7 (3/7), 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday, leaves the tournament with USD 2,200 and 12 WTA points.
Jaqueline Cristian is on the main singles draw and will play in the first round against an opponent coming through the qualifiers.
In the doubles draw, Cristian is partnering with Olga Danilovic (Serbia), while Gabriela Ruse teams up with Ashlyn Krueger (USA).
